FLANEUR
Flaneur: French term meaning 'stroller' used by nineteenth-century French poet Charles Baudelaire to identify an observer of modern urban life. Merideth is a modern day flaneur. Wherever in the world she is she is walking and discovering new museums to visit, gallery openings to attend, and bookshops and boutiques to explore.
Every Friday evening at 5PM a curator from the Frick discusses a piece of art work in their collection and selects an appropriate drink to match with the art. This portrait of Julia- Lady Peel was painted by one of the great portrait artists of his time, Sir Thomas Lawrence. The stunning array of bracelets Lady peel has stacked on her arm inspired the curator, Aimee Ng, to choose the Bijou as the cocktail to serve during her lecture. the Bijou was created by Harry Johnson who is considered to be the father of modern bartending. The recipe for this drink first appeared in the 1890s and consists of a combination of gin, sweet vermouth, and chartreuse. The 3 ingredients represent diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. The image depicts an elegantly dressed woman, Mobile teacher Joanne Thornton Wilson and her niece, Shirley Kirkseyand who must enter through the “Colored Entrance” because they are black.
