Exhibit extraordinaire at the MFA Boston. Fabric of a Nation - American Quilt Stories.
The shows 58 pieces on display not only tell the history of the US over 300 years, but they tell stories as well. This stunning piece, "To God and Truth" by Bisa Butler was taken from an 1899 photograph of the Morris Brown College baseball team. Thousands of brightly colored textiles intricately woven together bring the image to life. Morris Brown College was founded in 1881 and was the first educational institution in the state of Georgia to be owned and operated entirely by African Americans which was no small feat so shorty after the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery.
