"Titian: Women, Myth & Power"
Titian's "The Rape of Europa" is on display at the #IsabellaStewartGardnerMuseum in Boston, but it is not to be seen in its normal spot in the original museum. It is currently on display in the new wing as part of the current exhibit "Titian: Women, Myth & Power". Between the years 1551-1562 Titian created six poesies (poetries) for King Phillip II of Spain. These canvases recount tales from Ovid's Metamorphoses and it is the first time that all six have been on display together in nearly 500 years. Originally displayed in a single room in the imperial palace in Madrid, the pictures were gradually dispersed. One stayed in Spain; four went to England; and, in 1896, The Rape of Europa found its way to Boston where Isabella Stewart Gardener purchased it for approximately $100,000. The show first appeared at the National Gallery in London, moved on to the Museo del Prado in Madrid, and is making its last, and only American stop at the Gardner.
This is a world class show that is the envy of most larger museums so if you are in Boston before January 2, 2022 this is a show not to be missed.
